Online Topic (Due Week 5)
Over the next two weeks we need to assemble a Web Rating Form we all can use to evaluate the final projects. This form will be broken down into two main areas: functionality and aesthetics/design.
This week you are being asked to post on the class electronic bulletin board one criterion for evaluating the functionality of a Web page. Each criterion has two parts: question and evaluation. For example:
Are there any broken links? yes or no
Title bar informative? Not Useful 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Good Information
To receive full credit each criterion must be unique. If similar criteria are submitted, the posted date and time determine credit.
Functional criteria can fall into several categories. Dr. T. is open to any additions to the following categories that are a part of a Web page's functionality:
- Download time
- Title bar information
- Content
- Links
- Images
- Fonts
- Source code
- Frames
- Forms
- Scripts
We will add to these criteria as we explore HTML/XHTML coding in more detail over the next few weeks.
Homework (Due Week 5)
- Read Chapter 3 and take the quiz. Be able to define the Key Terms
and answer the end of chapter Review Questions. I would recommend trying the Exploration exercises that are interspersed throughout the chapter.
- BONUS: Complete Chapter 3 Explorations 1 thru 6 and email Dr. T. prior.html, select.html and poems.html. Two files are needed to complete the Chapter 3 Explorations:
a. select.html
b. poems.html.
- Email Dr. T. the storyboard for a genealogy Web site that tracks at least 5 families (25 points). All the families must be related by blood. Use a free-drawing program, like Paint or Paint Shop Pro, to create the storyboard. Every link and Web page must be shown in the storyboard. Lines representing links need arrowheads pointing at the target/destination page. Acceptable file formats for the storyboard are as follows:
- .BMP (Paint)
- .JPG (Joint Photographers Experts Group)
- .PNG (Portable Newtwork Graphics)
- .GIF (Graphics Exchange Format)
- .PPT or .PPTX (PowerPoint)
- .DOC or .DOCX (Word)
- Create the genealogy Web site storyboarded above and post it on your Web site by the target date next week (75 points). The HTML files that make up this genealogy Web site must meet the following criteria to receive full credit:
- Every file must contain comments with your name and the assignment due date after the <html> tag.
- Add to your personal Homework Homepage a link to the initial page of this genealogy site.
- The initial Web page must contain the Family name, a general overview of the family, and links to one or more of the family pages.
- Each family page should contain the names of the two parents and any children (when appropriate). Besides the date the couple were married, provide every birthday, death day, and the town and state everyone resides. Provide links to pages with related people.
- Common page footers placed at the end of each page. The page footer should include a horizontal rule, the family name, a link back to the initial genealogy page, a link back to the Homework homepage, the date the page was last updated, your name, and a link to your email address.
- NOTE: There is no longer a need to send me the validation results from your most recent Web pages. You still need to validate any pages you post on your Web site, but I always validate your pages when grading so there is no need to send me the results.
Remember, 10% of this homework grade is based on the creative use of HTML tags presented in Chapters 2 and 3. Points will be deducted for the use of HTML tags that have not been introduced in these chapters.
