Tongatapu

Island Airport

The concrete is quiet
Echoes of people talking
Have faded away

A cool breeze
Flows past empty chairs
And open carousels

Late in the afternoon
The first footsteps
Break the silence

Shop doors unlock
Lights turn on
Gates creak open

Taxis begin to arrive
Disgorging people
And mountains of luggage

Employees wonder in
Security guards rustle paper
Computers power up

Passengers stand in line
Names checked and seats assigned
Luggage whisked away

Airplanes are fueled
People crowd inside
Engines roar

Gates creak close
Employees wander off
The concrete is quiet

The island airport sleeps again
